The reading last week was a real eye opener. I feel this group has so much to give. I notices the different approaches that were used to convey the different stories.
In our next meeting I will be the maestro and I would like to try a joint exercise to show a character’s poverty through his behavior. I would also like to flush out deeper characters by showing the good side of the current president and why he makes bad policy. How he sees the world.

Here my take on Assignment: Show a character’s poverty through his behavior.

Pete drove up in an old white station wagon with his two girls. He smiles as her got out. His pants sagged and his faded shirt limped.
“Well, we made it , how is everything. Ok?” he asked with a big smile showing his yellow stain teeth. “The girls are in the back still sleeping.”
“A friend of my lent my his car for the trip. It ran ok but it doesn’t have reverse but I don’t need that gear” he said with pride.

In our last meeting Emma brough up an interesting techique, maybe inadvertently. Its strange I have been on the trail of this device. . . that gives intonation and inflection to a written word or phrase. Black English makes heavy use of this device but is usually limited to slang. Emma example opened my eyes to the value of shock words ie. " Hoe" being used by a person of another culture and generation.
In the current book I am reading, " The Art of Subtext" I was directed to a writer who in known for her use of words the evoke emotions: Katherine Ann Porter. Emma's " She wore tight pants that tear at the threads because she wanted to look like a hoe" was a profound phrase. It evoked emotion, shock and told so much about the person saying it and the person it was said about. Good job Emma
